The power of Graphic Recording and Visual Facilitation. How amazing Tim Hamons is.

How I was amazed about the power of graphic recording.

It was when I conducted my original workshop in IAF Asia conference in Singapore for the first time in 2014. He attended my workshop standing in front of a big flip chart. I didn’t know what he would be doing, He stuck to the flip chart grabbing some markers.

He was Tim Hamons.

It was the first time for me to facilitate a workshop in English language for the international conference. I had to run the workshop by alone. Even though I’ve spent a lot of time to prepare for it, I was still nervous.

As I started the workshop, Tim started to draw something on a big flip chart. I noticed what he was doing and I perceived he must be a scribe something.

As I proceed the workshop, I’ve been getting preoccupied with how to run the workshop better. So I was not aware of what a flip chart would be coming up with.

And when I finished the workshop with the relieved feeling and a little bitter sentiment, I was so surprised to see totally unexpected scenery. A flip chart laid down before Tim came up with an amazing shift.

It depicted my workshop as a really significant journey.

This is the graphic recording of my workshop Tim has drawn

It looked far more valuable rather than I’ve really delivered.

My workshop title is “Engagement beyond language”. It’s about the engagement under the diverse situation, particularly where the language is likely to be barrier. For most Japanese to overcome language barrier is so hard challenge. Because Japanese tend to shy away from expressing themselves due to lack of English conversation skills.

But I wanted to emphasize language doesn’t matter, mindset matters for various background participants out there.

So in this workshop, I set the exercise in which participant groups challenge to create a small statue with LEGO without any verbal communication. Group members are allowed to use only ”Blah, blah…” when they communicate with other group members.

I achieved to bring playful and exciting atmosphere in the session. And it made me feel participants learned a lot how to get engagement in diverse tough situation from it. But it’s still subtle climate left.

This workshop brought a lot of debrief and made me aware of bunch of things to improve.

And Tim’s graphic recording looked far more valuable rather than I’ve really delivered. And it made me proud of my effort. Honestly, I’m not sure if my workshop deserved to be depicted as he made it. Meanwhile there’s no exaggeration or window dressing. Tim accurately singled out very important key messages from what I really mentioned including even what I wasn’t conscious about.

In other words, my workshop completed with Tim’s graphic recording. Since then, I became a devout believer of graphic recording and huge fan of Tim Hamons.

This time it’s so great honor for me to organize Tim’s workshop. Not only for graphic recorders, but also for all people who’s interested in applying the magic of visual in facilitation or your expertise, it should be an amazing new journey.
